How to Play Seven Card Stud

Seven Card Stud is played with 2-8 players and a normal deck of 52 cards. This poker variation is still widely popular and can be found at most casinos and poker sites. This game is quite a bit different than Texas Holdem and it offers players a refreshing break from the norm.

The Antes

Seven Card Stud uses an antes system to generate a small pot at the beginning of each hand. At the beginning of each hand, each player must ante a small amount of money to the pot. The size of the ante is usually equal to about 10% the size of the smaller betting limit.

Third Street

The dealer gives each player two cards face down and one card face up. The cards should be dealt one at a time clockwise around the table until each player has three cards. The player with the lowest card showing must pay the bring-in, which is a small, forced bet equal to half the size of the lower betting limit.

The player who pays the bring-in starts the first round of betting. This player may complete the bring-in to a full minimum bet or he may leave it as is. The betting action moves clockwise around the table. The first player to make a bet in this round must complete the bring-in and then after that all bets and raises are made in increments of the lower betting limit.

Fourth Street

One card is dealt face up to each player. This is followed by a round of betting that begins with the player who has the highest hand showing. From here on out, all betting rounds begin with the player who has the best hand showing. Additionally, players have the option to check until any other player makes a bet that round.

Fifth Street

One card is dealt face up to each player. This is followed by another round of betting. In fixed limit games, this is where players must start using the upper betting limit.

Sixth Street

One card is dealt face up to each player. This is followed by another round of betting.

Seventh Street

One card is dealt face down to each player. There is one last round of betting. If there are two or more players remaining at this point, those players reveal their hands. The player who has the best five card poker hand, using any five of his seven cards, wins the pot.
