Joseph Cheong Continues Impressive Circuit Run With Second Career Ring
Joseph Cheong may be best known for his blow up in the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event, but since that time he has amassed an impressive poker career with over $12 million in career earnings.
Cheong added to his resume over the weekend after making two final tables in a single day at the WSOP Circuit Planet Hollywood stop and taking down his second career circuit ring in the High Roller.
Cheong Continues Impressive Circuit Run
Joseph Cheong has been on quite the run lately in WSOP Circuit events. Since the end of February, he has cashed in five events, making final tables in four of them. At the circuit stop at the Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles, he made two final tables, finishing 7th in the $625 NL Bounty event and finishing runner-up to Loni Harwood in the $2,200 NL High Roller.
He then went to the WSOP Planet Hollywood stop where he went deep in the Main Event, making the final table. Unfortunately, he was unable to get anything going and subsequently finished in 8th place for $22,436.
After he busted the Main Event, he decided to enter the $2,200 High Roller and ended up taking down his second career ring.
Cheong Wins Planet Hollywood High Roller for Second Career Ring
The $2,200 NL High Roller was a two-day event that kicked off on Easter Sunday. After busting out the Main Event, he late registered the High Roller and was part of the 109 entry field.
Cheong quickly went to work and by the time the final table was reached, he had amassed a stack of 400,000. This was good enough to put him in contention to make a final table run.
Cheong wasn’t the only big name at this final table. Dylan Wilkerson, Ankush Mandavia, Steve Foutty and Eric Baldwin all made the final.
At the start of heads-up action, Cheong held more than a 2:1 chip lead over Hyon Kim. As is his style, Cheong started hammering Kim with his stack but it cost him as Kim picked off a bluff shove and doubled-up.
Cheong continued with the aggression to the point where Kim made a mistake in the final hand. Cheong shoved with K-10 and Kim called with Q-J. Cheong ended up catching a king on the river to take the hand, the $65,399 top prize and his second career WSOP circuit ring.
It’s been a long drought for Cheong in WSOP circuit events. His last ring victory came back in 2010 at the Rincon Circuit stop. The ring victory came just months before his 2010 WSOP Main Event run.
Cheong looked to be destined for a heads-up confrontation against Jonathan Duhamel for the title, but a massive hand three-handed resulted in his elimination in third place. While he walked away with $4.13 million, that blow up cost him about $1.4 million in equity as second was guaranteed $5.54 million. Jonathan Duhamel walked away with the title.
Cheong Still Seeks First Major Poker Title
After the Main Event, Cheong has remained relevant in the poker community and has proven his 2010 run was no fluke. In 2013, he won the Manila Million for $1.34 million just a week after finishing runner-up in the 2013 WSOP APAC High Roller Event.
One thing that has eluded Cheong so far is a major poker title. While he has numerous final tables and smaller event wins, he has yet to take down a WSOP, WPT or other major live poker title. He presently has over $12.2 million in live earnings.
Cheong has been on quite the heater in recent weeks and if he can continue his momentum, he may prove to be a major force at the upcoming 2018 World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
