Daniel Negreanu Releases Summer Schedule – To Spend $2 Million
Daniel Negreanu revealed last year that he lost money in live tournament poker for the second straight year despite earning $2.7 million in events. This year, he already has $1.2 million but after a recent reveal on his blog at Full Contact Poker, he’s going to reinvest those earnings and then some.
According to his blog, Negreanu will be spending over $2 million in total buy-ins this summer with $1.4 million of those at the 2018 World Series of Poker.
Negreanu to Spend $600,000 Before WSOP Starts
Negreanu revealed in his blog that “there is a good chance I spend $600,000 in buy-ins” leading up to the 2018 WSOP. There are multiple $25k buy-in events at both Aria and Bellagio before the WSOP and there is also the $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl that he will be playing. The SHRB will obviously take half of those total buy-ins.
Negreanu has really improved his High Roller play over the last couple of years. This has been evidenced by seven cashes and six final tables in events with a $25,000 buy-in or higher. In November, he finished runner-up in the $100k Super High Roller at the WPT Five Diamond World Poker Classic.
He admitted that he’s had to work on his game in order to compete with the younger generation of poker players. In addition, fellow Poker Hall of Famer Erik Seidel has been a staple of High Roller tournaments for years now and is within striking distance of Negreanu for first on Poker’s All-Time Money List.
Negreanu to Spend $1.4 Million in Buy-ins at 2018 WSOP
Of course, the meat of Negreanu’s post centered around his endeavors at the 2018 WSOP. Presently, he is planning on playing up to 39 events with combined buy-ins of $1.4 million. He is playing in all the high buy-in events including the $100k NL, the $50k Poker Player’s Championship, the $25k PLO and the $50k NL Hold’em.
In addition, Negreanu revealed that he is planning on playing the $1 million Big One for One Drop. Should he choose to play, and it is difficult to imagine him skipping the event, he plans on selling 50% of his action at face value. No doubt he will easily sell his action, but that goes to show just how expensive the High Roller lifestyle can get.
There are naturally a few caveats to this schedule. He doesn’t plan on multi-tabling events. If he makes a Day 2, he will focus on that event and enter the next one if he busts before the end of late registration.
Of course, if he is contending for a WSOP bracelet in any events, he will naturally put his bracelet shot as a priority over trying to squeeze in another event.
Negreanu Plans to VLOG His Progress Once Again
Many of you remember that Negreanu ran a daily VLOG of his WSOP exploits last year and it proved insanely popular. He plans to do daily VLOGs yet again and promises that he will break down more hands this time around. He’s also promising a “really cool new way” to deliver those hands.
The big question now is whether Negreanu is taking on so many events that he risks going into the red yet again this year. It really depends on how well he runs during the Series. He earned a combined $699,804 in events last year and a repeat performance would put him into the black for the bulk of his WSOP events.
The One Drop event is the one that could make or break him for the Series. We all remember his runner-up finish in 2014 for $8.28 million and a similar finish would easily make his year. A bust out prior to the money may put him in a hole he will find difficult to bury out of.
Granted, if he does well in any of the events leading up to the WSOP, he will have a bit of a cushion. If he can manage a top-three finish in the 2018 Super High Roller Bowl, he would essentially be freerolling for the WSOP.
Regardless of what happens, it should prove to be an exciting sweat for poker fans around the world.
