Alexandros Kolonias Wins 2019 WSOP Europe Main Event
The 2019 World Series of Poker Europe is in its final days and we now know the champion of its Main Event. Greek high roller Alexandros Kolonias came out on top of a field of 541 entires to take his first WSOP bracelet and the WSOP-E Main Event title.
Kolonias survived a final table that included Julien Martini, Anh Do, and WSOP Main Event runner-up Dario Sammartino.
Anthony Zinno Had Shot at Player of the Year
Heading into the final table of this event, the two big stories were Anthony Zinno and Dario Sammartino. Sammartino finished runner-up in the WSOP Main Event back in July and was just the fourth player in history to make the WSOP-E Main Event final table the same year they made the WSOP Las Vegas Main Event final.
Anthony Zinno came into the final table as the overall chip leader and with a shot of leapfrogging everyone for WSOP Player of the Year. In order to do so, Zinno had to win the event.
However, with four players left, Zinno had dropped to the short stack and Sammartino was third in chips. Zinno was able to rebound, but Sammartino continued to slide. Eventually, Sammartino was all-in with A-K against J-10 for Claas Segebrecht.
A jack on the flop was enough to send Sammartino to the rail in fourth place. While it wasn’t a win, Sammartino still earned a very respectable €341,702.
Anthony Zinno was second in chips with three players left but suffered a crushing defeat against then short-stacked Alexandros Kolonias. Zinno shoved from the small blind with pocket threes and Kolonias called with Ac-Jc. The flop produced an ace and put Kolonias into the lead. Zinno was unable to catch an ace and was left with just over three big blinds.
Amazingly, Zinno managed to triple up and stayed active for a few hands, but eventually, his run ran out. Again it was Kolonias that dealt the blow. Zinno was all-in with A-9 and Kolonia called with J-10. Kolonias spiked lucky again, catching a jack on the flop. Zinno couldn’t catch an ace and was eliminated in third place.
Zinno earned €485,291 for third place but only received 552 points towards Player of the Year. He is now fourth overall with 3,270.33 points. He will have to win the Colossus in order to win Player of the Year.
Kolonias Defeats Segebrecht for First Bracelet
Heads-up play in this event was between Alexandro Kolonias and Claas Segebrecht. Heads-up play did not last long as both players picked up hands to go to war with. After a raise from Kolonias pre-flop, Segebrecht three-bet shoved with pocket threes. Kolonias called with As-Ks and the players were off to the races.
The flop fell Kc-Qd-2s and Kolonias went into the lead. The turn and river failed to produce a three and Kolonias was the champion. Claas Segebrecht finished runner-up, earning €700,639.

Alexandros Kolonias is the champion of the 2019 WSOP Europe Main Event after defeating a field of 541 entries. He earned his first WSOP bracelet along with €1,133,678 in prize money. After winning the event, he told reporters, “I still haven’t figured it out in my mind what actually happened. I am really happy about the way I played in the beginning, One level was not so good when we had four left, but things worked out for me.”
Kolonias continued that he does not play many live poker tournaments and that it was “great to make this one count.” He also said that he will likely continue to primarily play online poker and just play five or six live poker tournaments a year.
With the Main Event in the books, the final event is the Colossus. Opening flights of the event have been running all week and will conclude on Saturday. Day 2 will play on Sunday and play will continue on Monday to a winner.
Daniel Negreanu has already min-cashed in the event and has added to his Player of the Year totals. Shaun Deeb has advanced to Day 2 and is looking for a deep run to try and close the gap and try to leapfrog both Robert Campbell and Daniel Negreanu for 2019 WSOP Player of the Year.
