2018 Super High Roller Bowl Registration Opens March 1st
Over the last three years, the Super High Roller Bowl has become the premier High Roller event in live poker. On Monday, Poker Central announced via a press release that the 2018 Super High Roller Bowl will be held from May 27-30 at the Aria Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
This year’s event will feature a field of 48 players with a prize pool of around $14 million. The winner will walk away with a cool $5 million. Only the WSOP Main Event and the Big One for One Drop will have a larger prize this year.
Pros vs. Wealthy Joes
Registration for this year’s event will begin on March 1 at Aria. The 2018 Super High Roller Bowl will again feature a $300,000 buy-in and have a field of 48 players, but 18 of those seats will be reserved for VIP guest entrants. If the field of 48 players is exceeded, then a lottery will be held to determine player seating.
A similar lottery was held last year to determine the non-VIP portion of the field. Last year’s event sold out in just seven hours, and odds are that similar will happen this year. Poker Central VP of content Sam Simmons commented, stating, “The Super High Roller Bowl is the world championship of high stakes tournament poker. We sold out in seven hours last year, so players will need to get their deposits in quickly. We look forward to bringing together poker’s biggest stars.”
The expectation is that the field will be a “Pros vs. Joes” style event with about pro players going against wealthy amateur players. However, the pros tend to dominate this event with a very few exceptions. Last year, the only “non-pro” at the final table was King’s Casino owner Leon Tsoukernik, but he is a well-known high stake cash game players, so it is hard to consider him a true “amateur” or even a “recreational player.”
PokerGo and NBC Sports Network to Broadcast Event
The Super High Roller Bowl will continue their partnership with NBC Sports Network as they will broadcast episodes of the event. In addition, the event will be live streamed on PokerGO.
According to Sean McCormack, director of poker operations at ARIA, “The Super High Roller Bowl consistently delivers both an elite level of competition and a unique excitement that only high-stakes poker provides. Last year’s event was one for the record books and this year will be no exception – we can’t wait to kick off one of the biggest tournaments of the year.”
Christoph Vogelsang took down last year’s event, earning $6 million. Six of the eight players at the final table all walked away poker millionaires. This year’s field will be smaller by eight players, meaning about $2 million less to the total prize pool. In 2016, Rainer Kempe walked away the victor in a 49 player field after chopping the prize pool with Fedor Holz. Officially, Kempe earned $5 million and Holz $3.5 million.
We pretty much can guess the players that will be playing in this year’s event, and like previous years, it will be a star-studded final table. Which big name pro will significantly pad their poker bankroll? We will find out in less than three months.
